SHIGERU BAN
EMIEL
"The Japanese have always had a special interest in paper, even as a material in architecture. After all, the traditional Japanese house is defined by paper shoji screens.
Now enter the cardboard tube into the world of paper architecture. You will never look at your loo paper roll in the same light again because architect Shigeru Ban has come up with a building system based on cardboard tube columns - exit bricks and mortar.
In the last decade Ban designed recyclable and easy to mount cardboard log houses as well as designing shelters for refugees in Rwanda. He is also recently responsible for designing the Japanese pavilion at EXPO 2000 in Hannover, a 75 metre long barrel structure made of giant cardboard tubes and covered in waterproof paper.
These structures are not just a great thing for the future of environmentally friendly architecture, they are also incredibly elegant."
